Maria Hubert von Staufer
Specialist Priest-Counsellor in Relationships and Vocations
Born in the UK October 15, 1945. Tried vocation with Third Order Regular Enclosed Franciscans, UK (left because convent closed and amalgamated with Poor Clares. I had not yet made my solemn profession so was free to leave). I was offered a position by the prior of the Benedictine parish of St. Albans in Warrington, Cheshire, with an opportunity to continue my studies and be part of a new counselling venture that was being formed by the Benedictines and the Liverpool Archdiocese. Its aim was to give assistance and comfort to priests who were suffering the aftermath of Vatican II. This, I felt, was my true vocation in life. I am married with three grown children and a grandchild, and I live in the UK.
Educated in UK and Spain: Church history, biblical studies, classics.
Bi-lingual English and Spanish, some Catalan and French.
Theology; moral theology, psychotherapy and specific training in the understanding of the problems of priests; various diploma courses for Health and Nutrition, Stress Management; Reflexology. Currently studying Counselling Science with the Counsellor Training Institute of Canada (Vancouver) and specializing in Seniors.
Worked with the Liverpool Archdiocese in the 1960-70s, the Benedictine monks in Cardiff in the 1980s, and currently undertaking work with the Archdiocese of Cardiff - always in the fields of vocation, relationships, depression, and health problems.
On counselling priests
Decided to come back into full-time therapy because of the need in the Church for specialized counsellors working with a spiritual emphasis and an inside understanding of the priest.
